The motor scooter was very much a phenomenon of post war Europe; the 1950s and 1960s saw a strong need for convenient, clean and affordable transportation. Cars were generally too expensive, especially for younger people, and the continental styling of the new Vespa and Lambretta models resonated strongly with the emerging youth culture of the post war years.
Most notable were the Mods in the UK: kids with an eye on French and Italian fashion; sharp suits, hand-made shoes and everso neat haircuts. The scooter was the perfect fit, but they went further, customising them with extra lights, mirrors, and aerials. The Who's 'Quadrophenia' tells the story of a young Mod, Jimmy, who spends much of the film on his Lambretta LI.
Classic scooters are highly desired; by todays Mods, vintage motorcycle enthusiasts, or by people with a love for nostalgia and retro design. But a number of new manufacturers produce outstanding vehicles, based on the 50s and 60s originals, but with the reliability of a modern bike.
